Over the course of the last few weeks, we have been reviewing our appeals for September 2017. We have had record numbers of appeals once again, which is lovely to see, as it reinforces the popularity of the school.
I have always said that it is hard to make decisions that determine a students’ future, based on one set of exams, all sat on the same day. However, this is how it is and indeed, it is what our older students have to accept, when they take their GCSE and A Level examinations. It does, nevertheless, make you question whether you can tell all you need to know about a child’s academic potential at the age of 11? At Invicta, we do not think you can. We think that all students are still developing in Years 6, 7, 8, and beyond. Our students undoubtedly mature at different times, learn at different rates, and also bring to our school a breadth of skills that reach beyond the classroom that are dependent upon their personal interests, gifts and talents. This is what makes the challenge of teaching so rewarding. As a result, we have a wide range of great sportswomen, musicians, actors and artists at the school, along with students who have a wide range of ability. The most important aspect of this, is that we know our students well and as a result, I am confident that they will thrive with us.
I firmly believe that children should be selected through the Kent Test but I also want to advocate that at Invicta, we take a holistic overview of each individual and the result of the Kent Test will form just a part of that picture once they arrive. It is an additional strand, rather than a decider of their fate. I hope this reassures our families. Our approach of combining the Kent Test results with meeting the child on several occasions and having an ongoing dialogue with their junior school, gives every student a genuine opportunity to reveal their potential.
So, it is with great delight that we are now embarking upon the next phase of our transition for our September cohort – both for Year 7 and Year 12. We take time to get to know our students and this is what makes Invicta special! We look forward to getting to know our new students from this point onwards.
