Geneva Day Two
Geneva – Day Two (Thursday 11 January 2018
The students were split off in to their various committee rooms today. They had a very productive day with each committee seeing their mock UN resolutions take shape. There was some intensive lobbying taking place as each country tried to push their agenda forward and there was a lot of give and take in the drafting and re-drafting of their proposals. All the debates are in French and English with real-time translation carried out by the students themselves (including two of our girls) in their sound-proof translator booths.
Our students are involved in:
1. In the Environment Committee, Honor Bolton and Bernie Ford were discussing:
· Improving the efficiency of green technology transfer to developing countries
· Counteracting overfishing for a sustainable use of marine resources
2. In the Forum on Indigenous People’s Rights, Tomi Banwo was discussing:
· Protecting and promoting the natural and cultural heritage of indigenous people
· Supporting indigenous communities in their development of tourism on their territories, to create sustained and inclusive economic growth
3. In the Forum on Urban Development, Katie-Louise Mason and Megan Pankhurst
were discussing:
· Promoting sustainable urban development
· Challenges concerning the collection and management of information necessary to the functioning of Smart Cities
4. In the Special Session of the Security Council, Isabel Carter and Emily Godon were discussing:
· Security Council reform
· The Creation of an Economic and Social Security Council
Bernie Ford and Honor Bolton were very active in defending France’s position as they took the floor in the Environment Committee, while Tomi Banwo gave a fantastic speech about the risk of assimilation for the people of Akha. Evie Horner and Guntash Manjat have been incredibly busy translating resolutions into English, both for the Security Council and for the
Committee for Trade. Tomorrow is the final day where the big gatherings of the General Assembly take place and final votes are taken before the official closing ceremony.
