Geneva Day Three
On Tuesday, 9 January 2018, Mrs Ricks and Miss Laming took nine Year 13 Politics and French students to Geneva for a Model United Nations conference. Over three days, the students spent time in official UN buildings holding debates in various committees. Topics of discussion included reform of the Security Council, green technology, urban development, and indigenous rights. Evie Horner and Guntash Mangat took on the role of translators from French into English. A month’s preparation finally came together when the students represented France and AKHA, and began to lobby with other delegates. As clauses were refined, alliances began to form, and resolutions were passed. A special mention goes to Isabel Carter and Emily Godon, who submitted a resolution on the creation of a new Social and Economic Security Council. Their resolution was requested by the “real” United Nations officials and will be used by them for debate in the future as a reference to the youth of today. In the forum of indigenous people’s rights, many of the represented tribes proposed a resolution to protect their heritage and their land. After further amendment, the resolution was not voted for because it had been changed so much that it no longer gave power to the people, but to the government. This reflects the vigorous debates that takes place day to day in UN forums and the power that they hold.

• Funniest delegate on the Forum for Urban Development – Katie-Louise Mason
