I love tennis and remember fondly travelling to Wimbledon to watch Jimmy Connors in the Men’s Final – a sign of my age!
I thoroughly enjoyed watching Friday’s match with Heather Watson and Serena Williams, whereby I joined the rest of the nation, on the edge of our seats watching a British hopeful coming close to beating the world number one.
Heather Watson, 23, the girl from Guernsey, gave ‘as good as she got’ as she took on Serena, the American power house, ten years her senior who has won 20 grand slams. She gave new hope to British women's tennis after coming within a whisker of beating such a high profile tennis player with such fire and determination; defying all expectations.
At one point, she was just two points away from winning. But, what I really liked was Heather’s approach to the defeat. She commented by saying, "I gave myself the opportunity to play against the best player in the world. I also gave myself the opportunity to beat her. I didn't take it this time. But I'm really glad I was in that situation because I can learn from it and do better next time." What a great lesson to be learned.
Today, we have Sports Day. It is always one of our very special days. The girls really do get behind their teams and everyone participates. Mrs Stafford always ‘books’ the weather and it is a day that every student remembers fondly. What I really love is that it combines the lessons that Heather Watson learnt regarding competition and determination but it also provides us with an opportunity to support one another. An over whelming aspect of Friday’s match was the way in which the crowd were behind Heather. At one point, the umpire had to ask for everyone to be quiet because they were so animated. This is exactly what we hope for today! Lots of excitement and fun along the way, whilst those students who really do excel in sport can, and those that do not enjoy it quite so much, still relish in the fact that they have participated whilst having fun and contributing towards their team.
In a similar way, I am looking forward to our annual production of Grease this week, which incidentally is already ‘Sold Out’ on Thursday and Friday, and promises to be a superb showcase of talent. I have no doubt that the audience will be ‘right behind’ the cast! We wish them the very best of luck, although they do not need it. I have seen some of the rehearsals and there is undoubtedly talent bursting at the seams for us to all enjoy!
