Geneva - Day 2
The students were split off in to their various committee rooms today. They had a very productive day with each committee seeing their mock UN resolutions take shape. There was some intensive lobbying taking place as each country tried to push their agenda forward and there was a lot of give and take in the drafting and re-drafting of their proposals. All the debates are in French and English with real-time translation carried out by the students themselves (including two of our girls) in their sound-proof translator booths.
Our students are involved in the following committees:
- SDG 7 – Energy (Ella and Mary), discussing:
- How to encourage the use of energy sources, proportionally to their impact on the environment?
- Ensuring economically reasonable and reliable distribution and storage of energy, in both developing and developed countries.
- SDG 12 – Reducing Waste (Ella ), discussing:
- Reducing packaging and promoting reusable materials.
- How can Intellectual Property help to develop new sustainable production patterns?
- SDG 17 – Partnerships (Hannah), discussing:
- Developing Public-Private partnerships to improve the quality and efficiency of services.
- How to involve civil society in the SDGs’ application.
- AI & Ethics (Sarah and Leila), discussing:
- The ethical implications of the deployment of Artificial Intelligence technologies for the international community.
- The legal rights and responsibilities (taxation, right to Intellectual Property, etc.) of autonomous artificial intelligence entities.
- AI & Society (Aimee and Kiera ), discussing:
- How to generalise the use of AI without affecting secure employment?
- How to ensure the intellectual property of works created by the AI?
Matilda and Toni have been incredibly busy translating resolutions into English, both for the Security Council and for the Committee for Reducing Waste. Tomorrow is the final day where the big gatherings of the General Assembly take place and final votes are taken before the official closing ceremony.
