The Importance of Exercise
As my A Level Examinations approach in just 3 weeks, I reflect on what helps me be as efficient as possible and make me work smarter and not harder.
In one of my breaks on Sunday, between the focused revision, I switched the TV on to see the London Marathon. It made me think about how important exercise is, not just physically but also its mental benefits. I have always enjoyed participating in sport, particularly skiing, running and cycling. I only get as close to football to watching it on the TV!
Exercise is so important in our daily lives, and its benefits are extensive. The NHS states that exercise can reduce your risk of major illnesses such as heart disease, strokes, type 2 diabetes and cancer by up to 50%. But as well as this, research shows that regular exercise can boost your self-esteem, mood, sleep quality and energy. This would all benefit our minds, particularly within an educational environment. The recommended daily amount of exercise for young people (5-18-year olds) is 1 hour. This can range from walking to the bus stop each day to a more vigorous activity such as tennis or running.
The idea of getting a better-quality sleep is beneficial for students because it allows them to be more focused at school, resulting in them working more efficiently or smarter. In my opinion, getting regular exercise is just as important as putting in the hours of revision.
There are ample opportunities to get involved with physical activity both inside and outside of school, and I would encourage everyone to participate in exercise as much as they can. It can be so enjoyable, especially with a friend or parent.
