Last week’s political event was a real talking point. What pleased me, was that it provided a genuine ‘buzz’ amongst students, staff, parents and visitors. We are constantly trying to impress upon our students, the importance of current affairs and this week has been no exception. It was great to see our A Level students Elliot, Matilda, Alex, Melissa, Katherine, Emily, Vincent and William all canvas for their relative political party and respective manifestos; encouraging students to think about the consequences and vote accordingly in our own mock election. Using the same ‘First past the post’ voting system used for the real election, we counted each tutor group as a constituency; the party with the most votes in each tutor group winning one seat. We then, waited with baited breath, as to what was going to happen nationally. Our results produced a fairly overwhelming result - if not one that was entirely representative of the national picture!
I like to follow Nick Robinson’s reports on politics and the economy. On Friday, he commented that ‘not since the fall of Thatcher or the Blair landslide, has there been a political moment quite like this one. This is the opening night of an extraordinary drama whose conclusion is utterly unknowable. Personal triumphs for the Prime Minister David Cameron and for Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon will not just reshape British politics but could perhaps reshape the future of the United Kingdom itself'. I have no doubt that we will look back on the 7 May in years to come and reflect on the good and the not so good aspects of this historic occasion. I do hope, however, that when our students vote in years to come, that they will look back on their experiences at Invicta, and think about how they have been encouraged to be responsible, informed and open minded voters with a conscience. I would also like to think that maybe we will have students who will have a part in reshaping our future too. Looking at the qualities of students like Elliot, Matilda, Warner, Melissa, Katherine, Emily, Vincent and William, I think that we have a lot to look forward to! It shall be interesting to see how their drama will unfold. I cannot wait to see!
