Over the last few weeks and months we have been witness to relentless campaigning for the General Election.
Just this week, we have seen powerful debates from the three main parties who faced tough questions from an audience on the Question Time special – everything from child benefit to immigration! What it has done is make us think about the importance of our local, national and international community – essentially citizenship. This is a key aspect of our role as educators – to prepare our students to be good, well informed and responsible citizens. In the context of an ever-shrinking and more closely connected world, this is perhaps more important today, than it has ever been.
At Invicta, we aim to nurture young women to be aware of their social, ethical and political responsibilities - ready to demonstrate leadership and work together to change the world for the better. We want them to be able to take innovative and entrepreneurial approaches to problem-solving. Importantly, we want our girls to be able to prosper in an increasingly global jobs market.
I am really pleased this week, therefore, to look forward to our own mock election, whereby students will review what is important to both themselves and others. It will certainly be interesting to see what they prioritise and how this reflects the nation’s viewpoint on Thursday. In a similar vein this week, we had our Public Speaking Competition and STEM Careers Fair – both events enabled our students to consider what is significant to them; either as part of their own career development or in expression of their opinions. What is very clear is that our students love to engage in further developing their knowledge – not just their academic studies, but their responsibilities in the global community. So, when I see students organise and accompany our Over 60’s Club on a trip to Rochester, as they have this week, I know that they are developing their responsibilities and awareness of the need to be a good citizen! I can certainly see a few politicians in the making, but one thing I definitely know, is that I can see lots of strong citizens in the making too!
