Creativity
Hello to all reading this article, I hope you are well! My name is Patricia Britto and I am incredibly privileged to be able to say that I am Head Prefect this year. I am so lucky to work alongside our other hard-working, dedicated, and always entertaining, Senior prefects on the team.
When tasked with writing this article, I was admittedly at a loss, having never been the most creative student during my time at school (but I can always appreciate a good bit of Hamilton!). Art has always been a slight struggle for me, and I would often find myself discouraged when a piece would not turn out how I expected it to. Luckily, my teachers and friends helped me to gain a positive outlook on my art piece and I knew, even if you cannot be the best at everything, if you persevere and put effort into a piece, your hard work will be noticed.
Throughout my time at Invicta, I have noticed something; I was looking at creativity from the wrong perspective. In my mind, it was limited to simply excelling at drawing or being able to compose music, but it was far from the truth. Creativity revolves around the ability to produce or use original and unusual ideas and can be found in a large amount of work that we do, both academically and in extracurricular (creativity, 2021).
The impact that it has on our enrichment is vast. Creativity can create a sense of freedom, as it gives us the permission to take risks and try new things, and creates an outlet for self-awareness and expression. Taking the time to develop our own ideas, thoughts and beliefs help build a sense of trust, understanding, and respect for our inner selves, allowing us to express ourselves better, which in turn instils faith and confidence in our instincts. Of course, expressing creativity can provide a channel for stress relief and develops problem-solving skills. (Labs, 2021)
Creativity can come in many forms, not just limited to arts. For example, when making defensive moves in advance whilst playing chess, writing an evaluative essay, or coming up with unique tactics to evade defensive players in netball.
Reflecting upon my short time so far as Head Prefect, our creativity as a team is incredibly apparent, considering what we have achieved thus far. Whether that be creating our House Spirit Quiz, or organising the Pad Donation, a large proportion of it was powered by our creativity – producing advertising and finding interesting topics to base the quiz around. Looking forward to the future, creativity will continue to have an integral part in everything we do, as we look to be innovative and original and to create a lasting impact on our school.
Recently, I took the time to indulge my sense of creativity. I have always been an avid baker, but I had always thought that decorating my bakes was best left to those on Bake Off. At Easter, I thought I would be creative by icing and decorating a cake that I had made freehand. Although, it was not the most beautiful cake (and certainly not worthy of Star Baker), I was, in the end, proud of myself for trying something new and being creative. By taking time to find ways to be creative and by producing an original item that I had made, I was inspired to rekindle my love of baking and to see baking as a hobby used to alleviate stress and a way to channel my creativity.
As I write this and exams are coming to a close, I encourage you to take time to be creative, in whatever form that may appear for you, whether it be rediscovering a love for painting, writing, or gardening or maybe trying to solve the Weekly Maths Challenges, or even joining a new extracurricular society, whether it be chess or badminton.
