Change can be frightening
As we head into our third week of term and get back into the rhythm of life at Invicta, this new year signals many changes for everyone. Whether this is entering a new school for our Year 7 and new Year 12 students, or simply returning back to school amidst the pandemic, it can be a daunting prospect, but also an exciting one.
Change can be frightening but is crucial to our lives – we simply would not be able to progress without it. For our new students, change comes in the form of entering a new environment. It can be easy to feel alone in these situations, but it is important to remember that there will be others having similar feelings and having been in the same place.
On my first day of Year 7, I was terrified the minute I left the bus and faced the Reception door. As the only person in my year from my primary school joining Invicta, I felt like I was going to be the odd one out, especially in what felt like overwhelmingly large crowds. However, it was the first team-building exercise we did in Form Time that I reluctantly took part in that showed me that everyone was extremely friendly and how easy it was to build the friendships I still have today.
From that point onwards, when trying something new, I try to embrace some of the fear I might have and take the first step towards it with confidence. It helped me do things that I never thought would be possible – such as applying for this Senior Prefect Role, which enabled me to earn the position of Head Prefect.
The new school year also leads to opportunities to create change in yourself as it brings about exciting new opportunities like joining new clubs and societies such as choir or Model UN and many more, all available to join at the upcoming Clubs and Societies Fair. There are also other ways to develop leadership skills by applying for a Prefect role, which could empower you to be able to help others through roles such as Wellbeing Prefect or Transition Prefect.
This coming term also presents multiple opportunities for our students to showcase all they have developed this year with events such as the 11+ Open Saturday and the Informal Concert.
I believe that it is incredibly important to try something new, in order to build new experiences for yourself, it allows you to develop as a person. Albeit sometimes hard and even unsettling, it is necessary to accept change, because it leads to many wonderful things such as new experiences, meeting new people, or simply enriching yourself and becoming a better you. Going through change causes your mind to expand in ways it previously had not, making you more adaptable, and arms you with confidence to help you thrive in new situations.
The year ahead will be exciting, sometimes challenging and, of course, filled with change, especially as we return to school after these unusual times, and has so much for our students to look forward to. To all reading this, I hope you take this article as motivation to make a change and try something new this term.
I hope you have a lovely week and have a great start to the school year!
