What does spring mean for you?
I absolutely love this time of year and what a wonderful couple of weeks Spring has bought us so far. As we have moved forwards out of winter, and further into spring, we can really enjoy longer days, brighter sunshine, blooming flowers, the sound of woodpeckers in trees and much more. I always feel like a weight is lifted at this time of year and experience a real flush of positivity.
In school, as well as outside of school, the benefits of the brighter, warmer weather can be seen as well. The new brighter season brings with it many new prospects and opportunities. I tend to think of this time of year as an opportunity to welcome new beginnings as well as revisiting the resolutions which I may, or may not, have been successful in keeping.
So why do I think this is all so important? Well, for those not sitting external examinations this summer, the idea of doing so might seem quite alien. However, for our Year 11 and Year 13 students the examinations are very much a reality! I think that this period, combined with a good old fashioned spring clean, allows for exciting changes. With the Easter break to be enjoyed, hopefully everyone will have time, and space, to make any necessary changes (after evaluating what might need to be done with regards to their schooling and study). There should also be time to consider how to embed these changes most effectively.
Taking full advantage of the positive feelings that I hope you are all enjoying at this time of year can sometimes be a challenge. For students not sitting external examinations it is a good time to organise files, folders, books and portfolios. A clean and tidy study spaces often fosters positive habits which benefit your studies. For those that are sitting the external examinations then this is the time of year to really change things, if change is needed. For many, it is a good time to really focus on what is working and reinforce those habits.
It is really important that over the Easter break, time is taken to rest, recharge batteries and clear our heads in order to move forward positively. Ensure that time is spent seeing friends and family and a good balance is struck. If you know that there is work to be done then do not procrastinate! Write a list now and ensure that you tackle it right at the beginning of the break meaning you can really enjoy yourself once your tasks are complete.
I find that this period of reflection can really enable change to happen. Continue to do all of the positive things that you already do and leave behind those habits which are not adding as much value as you would like. These sentiments go way beyond studying and should be entrenched in all aspects of life. Spending time considering what changes you want to make will really enable you to move into the summer term positively.
One final thought – as Easter is a time for new beginnings – why not challenge yourselves to grow something. Fruit, vegetables, trees or shrubs. You may want to sow some seeds or take a cutting to see how green your fingers are. I think you will be surprised at how easy it is to do and how rewarding and fulfilling it can be!
