Last week, we had an incredibly busy week...
Last week, we had an incredibly busy week with a Public Speaking Competition, a Secondary Debating Competition, a 16+ Open Evening, the Opening Ceremony of the Izatt Building and a Business Lunch. All of these events involved a number of students making speeches and networking.
As always, I have been extremely impressed with the confidence and ability of our students to speak publicly. I believe strongly that there are five essential skills for success: Concentration, Determination, Organization, Innovation and Communication. Communication is therefore something that I consider to be integral aspect of the teaching and learning at Invicta. Without strong communication, and the skills of public speaking, we would not have the ability to meet future challenges. Confidence in being able to greet and instruct an entire room full of strangers undoubtedly gives you the confidence to smile, shake hands and meet new individuals in more personal and less threatening circumstances, as well as being able to make a good impression on others and to help bridge gaps in understanding, cooperation; setting goals and objectives with employers, friends and relatives. Using public speaking effectively will allow us to make a difference in business, our community and perhaps even the world. By sharing information with others, we are better able to increase the impact of our hopes, dreams, desires and goals for life and the world around us. This was so apparent in both the Debating Competition and the Business Lunch this week, whereby girls shared their opinions and interests with those around them. They did not find this easy at first, but with time, they got better!
Public Speaking and the art of good communication is never easy. It is something that has to be mastered, as it does not always come naturally, but what I have seen this week, is that our students have been determined to embrace the challenge; they have concentrated and taken on board the advice they have been given and they have flourished as a result – delivering good speeches, great debates and graciously networked. To see students so nervous to start and then brim with confidence and pride once they have achieved their goal is incredible. It really does make me feel privileged to work with such talented students.
The point remains though, that Invicta will promote public speaking as an essential ingredient to a successful, empowered life. If we can ensure that our students master the finer points of public speaking along with the skills for success I have mentioned, there is a good chance that they will be able to tackle and master other opportunities and obstacles that come their way. So, we must do whatever we can to prepare them to be a good public speaker. We will work on the art of good public speaking as much as we will the essentials of courtesy and manners.
