This week, we have Year 11 and 13 Mock Examinations. I know that we can all remember the thought of the ‘dreaded’ exam; indeed, there are very few people that can actually say that they enjoy the process of revision or the actual examination! When talking to my colleagues, parents, students, friends and my own children, we can collectively reflect on our experiences – good and bad. However, one thing that I do know, is that the best thing that can come from this process, is the learning that we derive from ‘making mistakes’. The large majority of students who attend Invicta will have sat the 11+ Test in order to gain a place in a selective school and I am sure that even a student at the age of 10 or 11 will look back and recollect the errors that they made in the preparation for the test and, as a result, they became more knowledgeable about the area that they were originally weaker in. At school, we refer to this process as ‘gap analysis’. As our students progress throughout their educational journey, they become more and more familiar with the concept – learning to value the importance of identifying weaker skills or areas of knowledge and then ‘plugging the gaps’ as an invaluable part of their education. Not only is this an essential part of examination preparation, but I truly believe that this is a crucial life skill. We must be resilient if we are to cope with the ‘knocks’ that life will undoubtedly throw our way. How often do we say to ourselves ‘life is hard and competitive’? Training in this is therefore key. Bach is quoted to say ‘Mistakes – call them unexpected learning experiences’. I do agree with this, but what I feel strongly is that the most important aspect, is to be determined and resilient enough to not ignore the mistakes, and value the process of revision and exams. I really do wish our students the very best of luck this week and shall look forward to seeing their unwavering grit and strength of character develop whilst they prepare and reflect for their examinations. One thing I know for sure is that there will be elements that they will be pleased with too, because deep down, they all want to do well. That is what makes Invicta a very special place to learn – our students want to do well and are proud of their achievements and so am I!
