Dr Seuss, a famous children’s author wrote, ‘Oh, the Places You'll Go! Reach for the moon – it’s yours for the taking, if you go out there and grab for it with both hands’. I have always liked this quote and as a result, I reflect upon it often. This week, I have been lucky enough to have discussions with a number of students and parents about their ambitions – at both the Excel evening and in our Year 12 interviews. To hear of students’ ambitions is always a joy. However, it is also satisfying, when you talk to students who do not know what they want to do and you reassure them that is also perfectly fine too. When I was at school, I can honestly say that I would not have even thought of being a Headteacher and as such, I think it is extremely important for students to be ambitious in their future career ideas, but also to be flexible and adaptable. As Dr Seuss quite rightly identifies, ‘it is yours for the taking’. On Monday this week, we have our Year 8 Options Evening, and although we certainly do not expect students to have a firm idea of what they want to do in years to come, it is lovely to ‘start that ball rolling’. To see students genuinely excited about having some autonomy over their curriculum choices is lovely. It is equally good to hear students and their parents talk about the need to ‘grab opportunities’ and ‘reach for the moon’. Recently, we have had a number of students who have done exactly that – Laura has been accepted to read medicine at Cambridge, Katrina has been accepted to study at the University of Pennsylvania, Eloise has achieved great success in her ballet and jazz exams, Erin the highest scoring girl in the country for her age group at the Bebras Challenge at Oxford University, and our Year 7 – 11 students achieved fantastic results in the Kent Schools’ Cross Country Finals. I have no doubt that these students are both very proud of themselves, as am I, but that they will certainly all ‘go places’!
