17 students from neighbouring primary schools Offham, Mereworth and Lunsford joined forces with our own budding Invicta politicians to host a Model United Nations conference.
On 2 February 2016, seventeen students from neighbouring primary schools Offham, Mereworth and Lunsford joined forces with our own budding Invicta politicians to host a Model United Nations conference. The topic up for debate was universal access to clean drinking water and sanitation. Every country had a crack team of four young diplomats representing its interests, with Brazil, Australia, China, South Africa, India, Russia, France, the USA and Iran all in attendance. The students were outstanding in their display of determination and their passion for the issues facing our world today; each country put time and thought into their resolutions and lobbied with grace and intensity. I was particularly impressed with the young men and women from Mereworth Primary, who on two occasions took to the podium with incredible confidence and interest. I spoke to Mereworth students Freya and Darcy, the delegations from Russia, who were very excited and felt very lucky to be taking part in the event. It was amazing to see both how similar and how different this smaller Model United Nations conference was to the MUN my friends and I participated in in Geneva – the same sense of interest and importance was prevalent, but the young participants, I find, are more willing to discuss with clarity and diplomacy the issues at hand. Every student had respect for their peers and a fantastic work ethic – no doubt they all have bright and brilliant futures ahead of them. As the Secretary General Vinnie Fraser said, this MUN ‘has given us confidence in the future of international politics’.
