Last week, I attended a ‘Teachmeet’- an organised but informal meeting for teachers to share good practice, practical innovations and personal insights in teaching. Participants demonstrate good practice, or discuss a strategy that enhances classroom practice. I am very pleased and proud to say that two colleagues from Invicta, Mrs Laxton and Mrs Lindholm both shared their knowledge of iPads and Growth Mindset with colleagues from a large number of primary and secondary schools. This was an excellent opportunity to showcase the fact that Invicta really is at the forefront of so many strong and valued initiatives. In addition to this, I was thrilled to hear this week, that we had students ‘push boundaries’ at the Kent Debates competition, a United Nations Conference at Canterbury University and on a visit to the Magistrates court. I was also fortunate to witness this with our World School shortlisting and interview process, whereby over 23 students made presentations to highlight the reasons why they should be selected as the delegates to represent Invicta in Tokyo next October. Not only do I love to hear how students have put themselves forward to do things, but I thoroughly enjoy the fact that Invicta, students and staff, relish the opportunity to do things differently.
Having reflected on the World School interviews, it made me realise that many people do not excel in life because they are too afraid of taking the necessary steps to achieve their dreams. Pleasingly, this was not the case for our World School candidates – indeed, they dream of travel and new friendships. Alternatively, some people manifest fear as a safeguard from failure; others do not even try, believing that they are restricted by limits; while too many get caught up in the status quo. Growing up, we all feel these pressures, but instead of giving in to them, it is important to decide to ignore them and’ push the boundaries’. Last week, had these students not done that, they would not be where they are today. I am so proud of the fact that they have done this and achieved in the process. I cannot wait to see what our students achieve this week by ‘pushing the boundaries’. It is, after all, Exams Week for Years 11 – 13! I shall look forward to seeing them ‘push the limits’!
To inspire you, here are some quotes I like on ‘pushing boundaries’:
- “The sky is not my limit… I am.” – T.F. Hodge
- “The number of ways to live in one lifetime is limitless. So why limit yourself?” – Suzy Kassem
- “When they say you can't, they show you their limits, not yours.” – Kevin Keenoo
- “The only limits in your life are those that you set yourself.” – Celestine Chua
- “We cannot become what we want to be by remaining what we are.” – Max DePree
