The spirit of ‘intrapreneurship’ is certainly alive and well at Invicta
Our Business and Enterprise status as school is something that we are all passionate about. I strongly believe that our students must have a sound understanding of enterprise and everything ‘entrepreneurial’. Over the holiday, I have been reading about the concept of being an ‘intrapreneur’. This is a term, that on reflection, I happily encourage at Invicta for our staff and students.
The spirit of ‘intrapreneurship’ is certainly alive and well at Invicta, where we wholeheartedly encourage our staff and students to be change agents and come up with ideas that improve not only our joint learning, but also the way we work. In fact, a thriving culture of ‘intrapreneurship’ within the school has led to some of the wonderful things that make Invicta stand out.
Working on the frontlines, day to day, our staff know our students better than anyone. They have first-hand experience with our students’ needs and are therefore best placed to spot problems and come up with solutions to help them. This has been very evident in the way in which they have tailored their teaching to use technology with the use of apps, to help students assess their own learning and ultimately engage in their learning. It has also been seen through our Growth Mindset initiative, whereby we encourage students to think that they can achieve.
I too, encourage an open door policy for ideas and innovation in all we do. I know that some schools would not want to encourage ‘intrapreneurial’ thinking, worried that their staff might leave them to pursue a career elsewhere. Our mission is simple: we train our staff well enough so they can leave, and treat them well enough so they don't want to. This is just another example of the way we embrace ‘intrapraneurship’.
I therefore advocate the need to embrace our ability to see new, novel solutions and a different way of doing things - especially related to technology. The way schools have operated in the past, cannot be indicative of what is coming. Today, every school needs to become a technology school as we all live further online. We have the confidence in our own vision to present alternatives at Invicta. This is bold and exciting, but it is what makes us different from other schools.
Without change, schools stagnate and are left behind in the race toward innovation. So, I do like the idea of ‘intrapreneurs’ being our new breed of individuals that create changes of scale and bring our students and staff into 'future thinking'. Without the ‘intrapreneur’ we would most certainly deteriorate by lack of action, lack of risk taking, and fear of innovation. The role of the ‘intrapreneur’ at Invicta is one of the most important inside a team and, best of all, is self-chosen!
