Bar Mock Trial Competition
Miss Griggs sent this report:
On Saturday, 14 January, myself, Miss Harding and Mr Rzepka accompanied a team of 16 Invicta students to the University of Kent to participate in the Bar Mock Trial Competition against five other schools, hosted by Young Citizens UK.
The day consisted of three criminal court trials, based around cases students had been preparing speeches, questioning and cross-examinations for over the last few months.
Our students did Invicta proud by winning all three trials, swaying the jury in their favour and receiving the highest compliments from local lawyers and barristers. The student led Law Hub worked incredibly hard, took on advice from myself and Miss Harding, and, despite not winning on the day, proved they are all more than capable of taking up a career within the legal system.
Well done team!
Miss Harding: Invicta absolutely smashed it! Not only did they impress Lord Justice Males, but they represented the school to the highest possible standard. I am very impressed with the way each student has educated themselves on the cases and worked blissfully throughout the term to become the best representation they could. Special mention to the Defence team and the court artists for her beautiful work. Well done, Ladies!
Sarah in 10C commented: The team performed very well, with all speeches and cross-examinations delivered being received extraordinarily. These insightful and fresh perspectives on the two cases, ranging from whether a defendant’s lucidity demonstrates their true intentions and the role alcohol plays in assault trials to examinations of wilful naïvety, in which our prosecution argued: “The infantilisation of the defendant did not serve any purpose, other than demonstrate their childlike willingness to engage in illegal activity.”
Notable highlights from the trial include a powerful closing speech, delivered on the behalf of the defence; a fluent and cohesive examination-in-chief from the first Defence Barrister; Prosecution Witness One’s strategic answers, which were able to deflect the opposition’s questions; and Prosecution Barrister One’s unexpected and beautifully argued cross-examination.
Sathushana in Austen 2: On Saturday, I had the delight of watching Law Hub tackle different schools in the Bar Mock Trial head on, which was a nerve-wracking experience however everyone was incredible, and it was great to see such passionate and devoted students, dedicated to the task and the sessions. Well done to everyone that took part. You did an amazing job!
