Museology - Week 3
Izzy in Nightingale 1 sent this report:
At this week’s Museology lecture, the third session out of six, Skyla in 8N and Fathia in 9I presented us with some very interesting topics.
Skyla talked about torture devices, such as the iron maiden and the scavengers daughter. Despite being quite graphic she sensitively briefed us on their origins and how they might be used.
Many people found the iron maiden particularly interesting because of its likeness, as Skyla noted, to the chokey in ‘Matilda’. She was very articulate and kept the audience captivated. There was many a question at the end and some confused discussion about how these horrific devices would work.
Next Faith spoke on the life and theories of Sigmund Freud. Another graphic yet interesting topic, Freud’s theories (as we learned on Monday) are really quite bizarre but have held a large portion of physiological research for many years.
The audience were particularly intrigued by how his theory of the ‘Oedipus complex’ might have been impacted by his own childhood and view of his father rather than research. Much like Skyla’s talk, there were many questions to be asked about Freud’s motivations and why his theories survived, all of which Fathia answered eloquently pulling from her own research.
So far with the Museology lectures, our ambassadors have thoroughly enjoyed sharing their interests with an audience and we have loved listening to them. Look out for opportunities to do the same and get involved with the Maidstone Museum Friends ambassadors.
We hope to see you next week for talks by Sathy in Austen 2 and Iza in Colvin 1 in the Mezzanine at 3:45 pm.
