Parent Workshop - Why Reading Matters
On Monday, 6 February, Mr Tillbrook, our school librarian, led the first of our new online, parental workshops tackling key issues that effect your child’s education. His talk centred around the importance of cultivating a healthy reading habit within your child and encouraging them to access all manner of resources avaliable.
During the talk, Mr Tillbrook drew our attention to the many and varied benefits that having a strong understanding of literacy and a capable reading ability can have. Though not limited to, these include such improvements as increased future earnings, a happier and healthier child and the vital importance of literacy skills when approaching exams across the whole curriculum.
The talk also introduced simple yet effective ways that we can all support reading in our every day lives such as setting aside just 15 minutes each week, to begin with, to focus on reading. Other examples included reading at the same time as your child, even if you are not reading the same book, as studies have shown that parental modelling is far more effective at encouraging a child’s engagement with reading than any other strategy a school can put in place.
If you were unable to attend the talk, a full recording of the session is avaliable on our YouTube channel.
