Year 11 History Trip - Harlequin Theatre
Isabella in 11G sent this report:
On Friday, 24 February, 100 Year 11 students went to the Harlequin Theatre in Redhill, Surrey. We watched a play depicting the reign of Elizabethan England, where Queen Elizabeth was put on trial for actions she “may” have committed.
It was our job as the audience to decide whether she was guilty or not, and the actors included historical detail (and some aspects of humour) to convey a powerful message to the audience.
It was very entertaining and taught us a lot about the debate on Elizabeth’s actions from two different religious perspectives, Catholic and Protestant.
Between each scene, we also were given guidance from accomplished examiner and author Josh Brooman, who taught us how the exam questions on the Elizabeth paper are marked, and the audience were able to judge and mark their own examples down in a booklet that we were given.
This greatly helped by giving us greater knowledge of how the examiners approach the exam papers with marking and gave us an idea of how to write a successful answer to each question.
