A couple of weeks ago, Anne Longfield, the Children’s Commissioner, outlined proposals in the ‘Growing Up Digital Report’, calling for new laws to protect children's online privacy and data and for a digital ombudsman to be created to uphold their rights.
The report found that many young people are being left to fend for themselves on the internet against dangers such as bullying and grooming. Anne commented that, "The internet is an incredible force for good, but it is wholly irresponsible to let children roam in a world for which they are ill-prepared, which is subject to limited regulation and which is controlled by a small number of powerful organisations. It is critical that children are educated better so that they can enjoy the opportunities provided by the internet whilst minimising the well-known risks. It is also vital that children understand what they agree to when joining social media platforms, that their privacy is better protected, and they can have content posted about them removed quickly should they wish to."

I am therefore pleased to say that on Wednesday 8 February Safer Internet Day talks will be delivered at Invicta Grammar School to all students. Former student, and Diana Award winner, Konrad Eke will be returning from university where he is studying Computer Science, to deliver the Safer Internet Day presentations. He will be supported by three Year 9 students; Clara, Maddie and Ceri. This team of students delivered fantastic presentations last year to the VIAT primary schools and have been invited back to deliver their new presentation this year. After the incredibly informative safe-guarding assemblies that were delivered just before Christmas, the Safer Internet Day presentations will be an excellent opportunity to refresh everyone’s memory and highlight some of the key issues with regards to students keeping themselves safe online.
We are also holding a safe-guarding information evening in the Summer Term for parents and hope to see a large number of you there, as this will enable you to continue keeping your daughter safe when interacting in the very important online world, which we do value. We just need to ensure our girls are kept safe too!
