On Saturday, we hosted a Year 5 Taster Day.
On Saturday, we hosted a Year 5 Taster Day. It was lovely talking to both the girls and their parents; we had lots of smiles and enthusiasm which is great. I was particularly struck to see our Year 11 girls chatting with such animation to some of the Year 5 about the books they liked – namely Doctor Seuss. Not only was it a pleasure to see, what it did make me think! Who could forget any of Doctor Seuss’s characters? The zany Cat in the Hat… steadfast Horton… persistent Sam-I-Am… not to mention the activist Lorax. Doctor Seuss’s characters have been immortalized in the pages of children’s books across the globe. Those of us fortunate enough to grow up on a healthy diet of Doctor Seuss books will surely recognize some of the favorite Doctor Seuss quotes. But, one line that I particularly remember is: “Why fit in, when you were born to stand out?”
I have also recently read an article that referred to one of the worst phrases in the world is “the average person”. It debated ‘Who wants to be average?’ and ‘If the world was really made up of average people, it would be a very dull place to live.’ It went on to say that, ‘Thankfully, there is no such thing as an average person, or a normal person.’ I could not agree more!
One of our core values at Invicta is ‘Individuality’. We know that the most talented, thought-provoking, game-changing people are never ‘normal’. They usually overcome great obstacles, take surprising routes to their goals and, under no circumstances, do what people expect them to do. As Steve Jobs once said, they are “crazy ones”.
Our world is made up of extraordinary people. Everybody should strive to be exceptional and their individuality is therefore very important. So, as we embark upon our Year 8 Activity Week and our Year 7 Activity Days, I know that we will continue to encourage our girls to ‘step outside of the box’ and try new things. We will encourage them to ‘stand out’ for ‘trying’ and ‘having a go’, as well as for being ‘individual’ and/or part of a team! We saw lots of this in our fantastic Sports Day last Friday too. So many girls achieving individual success, but also so many, enjoying the team effort and team spirit. There is no doubt that many girls ‘stood out’ as being incredibly talented too. It was a joy to see – well done girls!
