Welcome to a new academic year!
Welcome to a new academic year! I do hope that you have all had a wonderful holiday and that you feel refreshed and ready to embark upon another exciting year as parents, students and staff.
Moving to a new school, or up a year – with new friends, teachers, subjects, rules and expectation – is a significant step for our young people. As adults, we remember how daunting it was, but we sometimes take it for granted that students will be able to cope with such a change.
The truth is, for many young people, the changing of schools or starting a new academic year is filled with very mixed emotions – for some, they cannot wait to get going and for others, they will be a little more apprehensive. Our job is to make sure that everyone is looked after; that they feel safe and secure as well as happy.
We are really looking forward to our students coming to school today. I am confident that no matter how our students feel, that by the end of the day, they will feel confident and excited in our supportive, nurturing environment – one where they will know who to go to for inspiration, help and a listening ear!
I know that by the end of the day too, the energy and enthusiasm will be infectious - new friends, new teachers and new challenges. So, it is pertinent at this point to think about the importance of confidence. To embrace all these new things, we must know that we are ‘all in the same boat’ and we will all support one another. That is why my challenge to students this year is to ‘Be kind whenever possible, because it is always possible’. I am sure that our students and staff will relish many an opportunity to be kind to one another as they support their new and existing friends through a time of change with energy, enthusiasm and confidence. I shall look forward to sharing the outcomes of this with you throughout the course of this year.
