2016 Greece - Day 2
Greece Day Two
This morning after having a lovely breakfast, complete with fresh orange, and picking up our packed lunch, we headed off to Mycenae - where Agamemnon, the leader of all the Greeks at the Trojan War, lived. We first visited his tomb by Spider Mountain. Clad with rain jackets, shorts, sunglasses and umbrella, we really fitted the tourist cliché. The tomb was incredible, and really demonstrated how advanced ancient engineering was. It's a honey comb tomb which means it was very tall, and looters would need to go through the roof to access it. We then visited the Lion Gate, where we had the obligatory group photo, and wandered round the museum, which was full of exciting archaeological artefacts. Inside the museum were lots of ancient pots and swords. Not to mention all the gold found in Mycenae. We then descended down a cistern, which Mr Giles claims is how to get to the Underworld: it was very dark and slippery but really cool. Before leaving, we visited Clytaemnestra’s tomb and enjoyed the magnificent views across the plain of Argos.
We then visited Epidaurus, a sanctuary to Aesclepius - God of Healing. There we visited the theatre of Epidaurus, where we performed a rather moving rendition of Antigone, much to the delight of the tourists. The Theatre is the best preserved ancient theatre in the world, and it was huge. However, the highlight of this day lay just beyond the entrance of the theatre, in the form of 2 rather adorable little puppies!!
Back to the Hotel for a lounge and a swim poolside before dinner and bed.
